Our Story

How it all started...

Mission Ebenezer Family Church was founded in June of 1959 by Rev. Miguel and Lupe Canales, as a Spanish speaking church. The church began with 15 people and it continues to grow, ministering to hundreds of families in the Los Angeles area. Principle growth came under the ministry of Pastors Isaac and Ritha Canales. Today, the third generation pastors and sons of Isaac and Ritha lead the church together, Josh and Coba. Pastors Josh and Bunmi Canales assumed the senior leadership role in April of 2019. Pastors Coba and Drea Canales serve as associate pastors at The Mission.
The Mission has strong community ties in the great city of Carson. It has been recognized frequently, both nationally and locally, for exemplary service to the community it proudly serves. Over the last 40 years it has moved, 7 times; from the projects of Harbor City to the house on Bolsa and Dominguez to Main and 2l3th, to 244th and Hawthorne, to Pastor's back yard, to Main and Torrance Blvd., and finally to Figueroa and Torrance Blvd. It has been a long Journey.
It is a Spanish and English speaking church with 2 Worship times on Sunday, drawing widely from the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan area as well as enjoying regular mention in the media, having been featured in both the Los Angeles Times and the Daily Breeze.
It began as one of the smallest and only Spanish Assemblies in the South Bay. Over time, a switch was made to include English speaking worship for English speaking friends and family in the Spanish Congregation. The church is located off of the major on and off-ramps of LA's major freeway system and occupies the gates of village life.

Church Identity

We are Mission Ebenezer Family Church, The Mission. We are a multicultural, multi-generational, family-oriented, Pentecostal church that seeks to be a lighthouse in Los Angeles. We are a church on a mission. That mission is to restore, equip and send people to impact the world for Christ. We will do this through commitment to worship, prayer, the word and service.

The Problem

Broken relationships breed brokenness in the world. The first broken relationship we seek to address is the relationship between us and God. This is made possible through Jesus Christ. Then, we believe God has called us to restore relationships with one another (the world). We believe the role of the church is to provide the opportunity for this restoration to take place. We will do this through our mission.

Our Mission

"We exist to Restore, Equip, and Send people to impact the world for Christ."
  • Restore - Restoring people to God, family, church, and community (2 Cor. 5:17-20).
  • Equip - Equipping people for a life of ministry and growth (Eph. 4:11-13).
  • Send - Sending people to impact family, community, and the world (Acts 1:8).
