Lesson Learned?

Recently, My friend was telling me the story of a “Lesson Unlearned” (He gave me permission to share it.)  At the age of 13 he decided to explore the boundaries of his parent’s rules.  He had been warned about sneaking out late at night.  One night before stepping out of the window his big brother looked at him and said, “If Dad catches you, you’re gonna regret it.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you!”  The young boy ignored his brother.  He took off.  He flagged down the youngsters cruising by.  On coming home that night the young man went to climb into the bedroom window.  He placed his hands on the window frame, stepped in with one foot and peeked in with his head and sneaky eyes, only to find his father sitting on the bed next to the window.  Let’s just say he was greeted by his father in the old school way. Lesson learned?  No.  He continued sneaking out and getting into mischief. It ultimately led him down a difficult path.  As he looks back on this moment of his life, he recounts this story as the lesson he never learned. Had he learned it then, it would have saved him a lot of mistakes and missteps in life. With regret in his
voice he stammered, “If I had only listened.” This story reminds me of Genesis 6-9, where God engaged Noah and humankind in a way where a lesson was meant to be learned. Gen. 6:5-8 speaks of the wickedness, evil and violence that ruled the earth.  The Bible says God regretted creating the human race.  He wanted to wipe us out completely, but he showed us mercy on account of Noah.  Noah found favor with God.  God flooded the earth, sparing only Noah and his family and select animals on the boat he built (Gen. 7). Then, God gave Noah the rainbow as a promise that He would never destroy life as he did in the flood (Gen. 9).  We were meant to learn a lesson in this story.  When we look at the condition of our fallen world today we must all ask the question, “Did we?”

Jesus is the Answer,

Pastor Josh
