Problem: The Jewish exile into Babylon was near its end and Israel was preparing for their return to Jerusalem. Having been a fractured people for 70 years they did not have a leader. In addition, the work that needed to be done to rebuild their city walls appeared too great. What would they do? A miracle was needed. Enter, God! The Lord spoke to Nehemiah, whose name means “My God Comforts”. Nehemiah was the cup-bearer to King Artaxerxes, king of Persia. His job was to test every cup and meal for poison before it made its way to the lips of the king. He was near and dear the king, a trusted advisor.
Solution: Now, God was calling Nehemiah to an impossible task, a task that would take him away from the king — the task of rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls without money, resources or a workforce. Despite the challenges, Nehemiah paid no attention to them. Neither did he allow opposition and haters to deter him (Neh. 2:19; 4:1). Nehemiah believed God and acted upon this belief, “The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding” (Neh. 2:20).
Strategy: Nehemiah’s leadership and vision to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem captured the hearts and minds of the people. They were sold out for the cause. As such, their resources followed. Together, they rebuilt the wall in record time. The people worked tirelessly and sacrificially to make it happen. They were not motivated by money, rewards, gimmicks, power, or position. They were motivated by the mere possibility of rebuilding God’s holy city. God’s city needs rebuilding — it starts with you…family by family…just as Nehemiah rebuilt the walls with all the heads of tribes of Israel assigned each to their own section of the city (Neh. 3:1-32).
Application: Does that strike a chord with you? Are there walls in your lives that need to be rebuilt? Are you waiting for something to happen or for something to fall on your lap out of heaven? Maybe you are waiting to win “the Lotto” before doing anything about it? Don’t wait! Get going! Get to work! There is no time to waste. God is calling your family to rebuild your section of the God’s holy city right there where you are.
Remember, sometimes walls have to be torn down to bring us back together!
